NVivo Workshop

Contributor: Jennifer Marvin

Create a new folder

To keep everything organized, you will want to set up a folder for survey data just as we did with the Google reviews. To create a new folder:

  1. In the Navigation View, right click on Files and select New Folder.

Files context menu in Navigation View with ‘New Folder…’ highlighted.

  1. In the New Folder dialog, in the Name box, enter Survey

‘New Folder’ dialog with Name set to ‘Survey’.

Now, when we import our survey data, it will go into this specific folder instead of being mixed in with everything else.

Navigation View with ‘Survey’ folder highlighted under Files.

  2. Select Next.
  3. Review Check you data format.
    1. Note: For How many rows are used for your question headers?, it’s best to have only one header row, because multiple rows can sometimes cause errors during import.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Review Manage your survey respondents.
Note: we are integrating our survey respondents into our review respondents because they include some of the same people.
    1. For Where in your project would you like to store your cases?, select Change Location and then Cases. Select OK.
    2. For Select a unique ID for each of your cases, select Response ID.

Important: Cases can only belong to one classification - if you chose to Create a new classification called Survey Respondent, then this would overwrite / remove the content in your Person classification if the attributes were different. By adding to an existing classification, you will preserve what existed before, and add to it.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Review Identify open-ended and closed-ended questions.
    1. Cycle through each Respondent.

  9. Review Autocode Themes and Sentiment.
    1. Deselect Autocode Themes and Autocode Sentiment.
