Licensing

To be consistent with the website, and established practice, the default license for all eLearning content will be  CC-BY-NC-SA. This license already exists on most eLearning content, and the LibGuides platform has a blanket license which means no other license can be applied to content on the platform.

This strategy will provide a more consistent user experience between the different library platforms (website, LibGuides, DLC, etc.).

Because of the limitations of platforms and/or format types, there is significant variability in the formatting of the license information. The CC license statement appears, with the identified formatting, in the following places:

  • LibGuides: runner at the bottom of the page
    • No image, link
  • Videos: Closing slide
    • Image, no link
  • Tutorials: Introduction page
    • No image, link
  • Handouts: runner at the bottom of last page
    • No Image, link
  • DLC: Towards the bottom of the page, under a “Creative Commons” heading
    • Image, link

Content creators can request a different license for new content with the exception of LibGuides because of the blanket platform license. The default license, as well as the option to select a different license for specific content types, will be communicated to content creators in the eLearning content creation process and documentation.

To learn more about your options, please review the Use Creative Commons Licenses guide.

Exceptions

Licensing is a complex issue that will require some flexibility. Some content may not be appropriate to license or may already have an existing license that is incompatible. The eLearning team will adjudicate these exceptions on a case-by-case basis in collaboration with the copyright officer.

An example of this may include:

  • Content that is adapted from other sources that may have different license terms.

Attribution

Attribution will be provided on all new content that meets all the following criteria:

  • New learning object or content that has been significantly edited or updated
    • Examples of significant change include:
      • Adding new content
      • Making a substantial change to existing content
      • Adding a new page
  • Content that clearly demonstrates originality and/or creativity

Whenever there is a disagreement about whether or not these criteria are met, the eLearning team will consult with the Copyright officer to ensure consistency in the interpretation and application of criteria are maintained across all library platforms.

For content that meets the criteria above, we will:

  • Attribute a maximum of 5 individuals. Beyond that, we will remove the attribution statement.
  • Provide attribution on request during the creation process.
  • The attribution statement placement will vary depending on the format:
    • LibGuides: “Contributors” and the list of people, at the top of the page under the guide title
    • Handouts, Tutorials: “By” and the list of creators located at the top of the page or on the introduction slide
    • Videos: End credits
  • Names will be listed in the format of “first name last name”. No links to staff pages, social media accounts, CVs, or other websites will be included as part of the attribution. See the example below:

Screenshot of a LibGuide attribution example with "Contributors" and then three names in First Name Last Name format.

Content creators should provide names of contributors at the time of a new learning object request and the list must be finalized before publication. Once published, the list of contributors will not be changed. The contributor list can be reassessed and updated upon each significant change (see above) to a learning object.

Due to the nature of LibGuides, it is recommended that the list of contributors be reviewed with every major revision and contributions be assessed. It may be determined that some names need to be removed because their original contribution was removed. If there is any disagreement among the content creators about removing names,

  1. the decision will be made by the content creators’ unit manager/Head, or
  2. if more than 5 contributors, the list will be removed from the guide as per the criteria above.
