Instructor Toolkit: Accessible Course Materials

Assessing the accessibility of third-party content

Use this rubric when evaluating third-party materials like digital textbooks, publisher slide decks, videos, or learning platforms—especially when you can’t change or fix accessibility issues yourself.

You may still choose to use a resource that isn't accessible, but the results will inform you of potential barriers students may face, and identify content that may need attention if a student with an alternative format accommodation does register in your course.

The information can empower you to make more informed decisions about your course materials.

Tracking third-party video content

Many instructors are contacted in the first few weeks of the semester to inform them that a student enrolled in their course has a captioning or transcript accommodation.

Because the notification doesn't arrive until the semester has started, many instructors have expressed that they don't feel like they have time to properly gather and submit the third-party videos. To save time later, you can keep track of the videos in the document below as you find them and integrate them into your course. If you receive a notification about a captioning accommodation, you can simply submit the document along with the course code to LAS.

To learn more about captioning support, please see the Captioning Procedure webpage.
