Instructor Toolkit: Accessible Course Materials

Assessing the accesibility of instructor-made course materials

This tool helps you review course materials created by you—PowerPoint slides, Word documents, videos, or audio recordings—to see how accessible they are to all students, including those with disabilities. The results will inform you of potential barriers students may face, and identify content that may need attention if a student with an alternative format accommodation does register in your course. The information can empower you to address issues before the semester even begins.

Tracking instructor-made content

Instructors may be contacted at the beginning of the semester to inform them that a student enrolled in their course has an alternative format accommodation.

Because the notification doesn't arrive with much advanced notice, many instructors have expressed that they don't feel like they have time to properly prepare their course materials to meet accessibility requirements. To save time later, you can keep track of your course materials in the document below as you create them. You can keep track of potential barriers (e.g., missing alternative text), so that if you receive a notification about an accommodation, you will feel more prepared to provide this accommodation.
