What is the Read the Web Toolbar?

Kurzweil’s Read the Web Toolbar is a browser extension that allows you to read and highlight web pages while also providing access to familiar Kurzweil features such as dictionaries and translation. You can also bring content into your Kurzweil library by highlighting web pages and exporting your highlights, taking screenshots, and using the PDF reader feature in Chrome.

How to download the Read the Web Toolbar

The Read the Web Toolbar is compatible with Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

To add Read the Web to Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Head to the Chrome Web Store and search “Kurzweil”
  3. Select Add to Chrome
  4. Enable Read the Web from your Extensions menu
  5. Sign in with your Kurzweil username and password

To add Read the Web to Edge:

  1. Open Edge
  2. Head to Edge Add-ons and search “Kurzweil”
  3. Select Get
  4. Enable Read the Web from your Extensions menu
  5. Sign in with your Kurzweil username and password

To add Read the Web to Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. From Kurzweil’s Read the Web page you can access Other Tools
  3. Follow the “Instructions to add Read the Web to Firefox”
    1. Note: you will need to download the extension and then add it to Firefox
  4. Enable Read the Web from your Extensions menu
  5. Sign in with your Kurzweil username and password

How to use the Read the Web Toolbar

The Read the Web Toolbar is available for most sites with readable text. It may be helpful to pin the extension to your browser for easy access, so whenever you are on a site you want to use the toolbar for simply click on the Kurzweil logo.

The following features are available from the toolbar:

  • Kurzweil button allows you to quickly link to Kurzweil3000.com
  • Options menu to adjust settings for:
    • Voice – set your preferred voice and language
    • Reading Speed – faster or slower
    • Read Alternative Text for Images checkbox – will read alt text for all images
    • Unit – to set the reading unit to word, sentence, or paragraph
    • Mode – to set the reading mode to continuous, self paced, or word by word
    • Position – adjust position of toolbar on screen to left, centre, or right

  • Read Navigation Buttons
    • Play/Pause to start or stop reading
    • Forward and Backward to navigate the page by reading unit
  • Audio Reading Toggle – to activate silent reading mode
  • Dictionary – highlight a word and access dictionaries and a thesaurus
  • Translation – highlight a word or phrase and translate to a number of languages
  • Screen Shot Reader - allows you to take screen shots and import them to Kurzweil
    • Select the button and then drag the cursor to capture text or images
    • Screen shot will then open in Kurzweil for the Web where the image can be processed
  • Highlighter Tools – provides access to Highlighter Tools menu:
    • Activate Interactive Mode to highlight while reading (provides access to four colours)
    • Show or Hide highlights
    • Export Highlights to study guide, column notes, or vocabulary study guide
    • Delete All Highlights on this page
  • PDF Reader
    • Only available when you open a PDF on the web
    • Allows you to open a PDF in Kurzweil for Web Browsers
