Create Music and Record Audio using GarageBand

What is GarageBand?

GarageBand is a Mac OS and iOS program that you can use to compose your own music projects. Garageband allows you to

  • Arrange and mix music with recordings and loops
  • Synthesize instruments such as pianos, guitars, drums, etc.
  • Record vocals and musical instruments

Although a music background can help you with composition, you do not need prior knowledge of music theory to use GarageBand.

How do I get started?

  • Identify the purpose of the project you are working on -- is it an audio bed for a podcast? A voice-over for a radio advertisement?
  • Think about the mood that you intend to create with your composition
  • Make a list of equipment that you think you will need such as headphones, instruments and microphones
  • Familiarize yourself with the equipment by reading the quick start manuals on the manufacturer's website
  • Think about how you will export, share, and distribute your music project
