Screencast-O-Matic is a free screen casting and video editing software tool that can be launched directly from a browser. Screencast-O-Matic can be used to create video from your screen, and it doesn’t require you to download any software.

With a free account, users have access to:

  • 2GB of bandwidth/month
  • LMS integration
  • 30 music tracks

Screencast-O-Matic is best for

  • Video tutorials and lessons:
    • Lecture capture and student video assignments. 
  • Video creation for flipped classrooms.
  • Bi-directional student assignments. 

Limitations

  • Uploads to Screencast-O-Matic.com are limited to 15-minutes per upload, unless you have the Premium plan

Accessibility

You will need to create captions and provide a transcript to make your video accessible. Read more about making your videos accessible

QuickTime screen recording

QuickTime Player on Mac products can be used to capture and record your screen. Open QuickTime from your Applications folder, then choose File > New Screen Recording from the menu bar. The Screen Recording window will open.

QuickTime is free for all MacOS users.

QuickTime is best for

  • Simple screen recording on mac products.
  • Virtual lectures and tutorials.
    • Capturing course material.

Limitations

  • Only available on Mac's

Accessibility

Using QuickTime

Can use Mac's VoiceOver as well as keyboard controls to use Quicktime. For full keyboard access, set "All controls" in Keyboard & Mouse System preferences. Some controls are only partially supported. For more information, see the QuickTime Accessibility report and Mac Accessibility.

Creators of Content

Whatever you create with QuickTime, remember to review the guidelines for creating accessible videos. You will need to create captions and a transcript.

iorad is web-based software for businesses that helps create step-by-step tutorials for websites or applications. iorad captures everything the user does inside the capture frame and automatically breaks it down into step-by-step instructions. It knows where the actions took place, highlights them, and creates editable text instructions based on what the user clicked on.

With a free account, users have access to:

  • Unlimited public tutorials
  • Unlimited tutorial access for learners
  • Access to the centralized help center
  • Mobile access

iorad is best for

  • Cataloguing and categorization
  • Content and knowledge-based management
  • Collaboration
  • Instant sharing with employees, customers, or students
  • Training and creating training videos

Limitations

  • Cannot change language (if the screencast is created in English, it cannot be translated into French)
  • Minimal design features if looking to change the visual presentation of tutorials

Accessibility

iorad says that anything forward facing, meaning the tutorial player, meets Accessibility requirements. There are:

  • Captions and audio
  • Zoom in and out
  • Choice to move through it step by step or to watch it as a video
  • Download it as a pdf (not accessible)

The creator side is not accessible.

Techsmith capture

TechSmith screen capture software and solutions are for anyone who wants to create and share images and videos for better training, tutorials, lessons, and everyday communication.

This tool is free to download on chrome, internet explorer, and firefox.

Techsmith is best for

  • Training
  • Tutorials
  • Distance lessons and education 
    • Communication and collaboration
  • Webcam and system audio recording

Limitations

  • Falls short of fully-fledged video editing tools

WeVideo (screen recording feature)

WeVideo's screen recording option allows you to record a video of your entire computer screen or a single desktop window. Any actions that you take on the screen (scrolling, clicking, etc) are recorded. Once you finish recording you can save the recording as a video, and use it within WeVideo to work with or export.

The Media Studio at the library has an educational license. The educational account allows you to screen capture, and provides students with:

  • 5GB of space 
  • Standard HD resoultion

There are a limited number of seats available per semester. Please contact the library for more information.

WeVideo is best for

  • Distance learning
    • Demonstrations
  • Virtual communication
  • Explainer videos

Limitations

  • Screen Recording with WeVideo is only available on premium accounts (which are provided by the university, but LIMITED spots are available each semester)
  • Compatible with Chrome only. Must be version 70 or above

Accessibility

The WeVideo interface for video creation is not Accessible to people using screen readers.
