How do I print from Scholars Portal ebooks?

Note that the amount that can be printed varies from publisher to publisher. Usually around 20% or 36 pages, whichever is more.

  • There are two ways that ebook content can be printed depending on the format of the ebook.
    • 1. Look for a printer icon in the top right corner.
    • 2. If there is not printer icon, select "Export to PDF" or download a chapter PDF and print from Adobe Reader.

How do I download chapters and pages from an ebook?

  • Once the ebook is open, select "Export to PDF" button at the bottom left of the page.
  • If there is no "Export to PDF" option, you can download a chapter by choosing the print button in the right-hand corner and clicking "Save as PDF".
  • ​Remember, the amount that can be downloaded varies from publisher to publisher. Usually around 20% or 36 pages, whichever is more.

How do I copy and cut text from an ebook?

  • There are two ways to copy text, depending on the format of the ebook.
    • Some formats will allow you to directly highlight and copy text.
    • Other formats will present the "Copy Text" (bottom left) function to select text
      • Once you select text, a blue window will open and allow you to cut and copy the highlighted text.

How do I bookmark, highlight and make notes?

  • ​Login in to Scholars Portal to use these features.
    • You will be prompted to select University of Guelph.
    • If you are not already logged into your University of Guelph account, you may be prompted to sign in using your University of Guelph credentials.
  • Once logged in, the buttons for highlighting, bookmarking and making notes will appear at the bottom of the screen.
  • Ebooks that you bookmark, make notes on, or highlight will automatically be saved in "My Library"

Please note that only some ebooks have these features built-in. If these features do not appear on an ebook, try saving as a PDF and making notes in Adobe Reader.

How many copies are there of each ebook?

  • Most ebooks on Scholars Portal have unlimited copies. However, borrowable ebooks typically only have 1 copy
  • If an ebook is checked out, its "Expected Return Date" will be indicated below the image of the book cover.
  • Holds cannot be placed on ebooks.

How do I place a hold on an ebook?

  • You cannot place a hold on an ebook that is checked out. Borrowed ebook's expected return date will be indicated below the cover of the ebook.

How do I return a downloaded ebook?

  • Return a ebook in Adobe Digital Editions by right-clicking and choosing "return borrowed item"
  • There are no late fees, but returning an ebook makes it available to someone else sooner.

Can I put ebooks on my tablet/e-reader?

Please note that all ebooks may not be transferable.

  • You can transfer as much of a ebook as you're allowed to download (usually 20% or 36 pages, whichever is more).
  • Exported content will be in PDF format and can be transferred onto most tablets and e-readers.
  • Borrowable ebooks may also be read on tablets and e-readers. Please see Adobe's Guide on transferring ebooks to e-readers.
