Find eBooks

What are ebooks?

  • Ebooks are books in an electronic format that are either downloadable or accessible online
  • Ebooks are typically read on a computer monitor or from a handheld, mobile device
  • University of Guelph has 24/7 access and use to over 630,000 ebooks
  • Ebooks may be available in the following formats: PDF, EPUB and HTML

Why use ebooks?

  • Ebooks are useful because you can quickly search an entire text solely using keywords.
    • Tip: Try Control+F, or Command+F on a Mac. This is the keyboard shortcut for the Find command. If you're in a web browser and want to search text this will often bring up a search box. Use this search box to locate what you're looking for.
  • Ebooks allow you to digitally highlight, make notes and save citations.
    • Note: Usually, you will need to make an account with the vendor to do this.
  • There are no late fees! Ebooks will be returned automatically.

How do I find ebooks?

  • Remember to Login to your UG account using Single Sign-On to ensure access to all content.
  • Most often, Adobe Digital Editions and an Adobe ID are required to download ebooks onto your device.
  • Every ebook is different.
    • Some ebooks have limited copies, while others have unlimited copies.
    • Some ebooks have restrictions or closed copyright licencing on viewing, printing, downloading, copying, cutting, and pasting. These rights belong to the person or company who owns the content and are called Digital Rights Management (DRM).
  • It is important to note that publishers add or remove content constantly.

Why can't I get access to an ebook I found in Omni?

There could be a number of reasons for this.

  • Have you signed in using your UG credentials? You will need to be logged in and authenticated to access content.
  • Omni search results may include ebooks purchased by other university libraries. These ebooks are not available to Guelph users. Under the "Modify your results" menu on the left, select "Available in the U of G Library" to view titles available at Guelph.
  • The ebook title may no longer be available as the publisher may have removed it. A lot of ebook platforms work like a Netflix account, where content is added and removed constantly.
